When in Rome

Image
We woke up and it was Rome day! The day we had been waiting for, for a whole month. Torture right? We had only just packed after spending the night in the pub with Doug and Harry and had a frantic last check for the passports. We got an uber to stansted, where we arrived 3 hours early with plenty of time to kill. I felt a bit ropey so cained various drugs of the legal and pain killing variety and went to spoons for a few drinks. Classic. Our flight got delayed for an hour, which saw a few cheeky g n t's consumed in the queue and then we were well on our way. The flight was painless and infact I am really starting to enjoy flying aside from the whole giant metal, heavy tube in sky thing. I did however, need a wee and went to the very front instead of the back of the plane. I decided instead of doing the walk of shame back to my designated toilet, just to wait it out and managed to get trapped whilst the air hostesses worked their way up the isle offering a range of beverages and re...

Whenever I can Writing challenge - What I love about Christmas

Image
I've basically changed the challenge name because not only can I not be bothered to check what number I'm on but also, this almost definitely hasn't been done over 30 days. WHO HAS THIS TIME! I have been knee deep in research journals, citations and references for the past 2 weeks which I am sooo over for the next 2 weeks, which means I am ready to fully embrace my Christmas spirit! (And may have a little more time to write about something that isnt Freud or Bowlby) I am currently living through my hangover as I can't sleep, which sucks, but will however lead me onto number one of what I love about Christmas... 1) Glühwein with Jagermiester Oh man, I had 2 and 1/2 of these on an empty stomach and let me tell you, you need no more than 3. Whoever thought of mixing alcohol with an alcohol mixer was infact a genius. It is now my favourite Christmas drink. Though mulled wine always has been, I'm not sure i'll be satisfied without the Jager anymore. 2) Picking out pr...

How I lost almost 2 stone. My special diets and main secret.

Image
I was at my highest weight to my knowledge at 10.4lbs, which is a bit of junk in trunk carrying for a 5footer. I'd settled into a routine of drinking lots of red wine after about 2 years of not and eating more Camembert than you can shake a stick at. My partner then moved to London to go to university and that's when I started to eat less. It wasn't a concious thing. All I had knew was that the man I loved had moved over 100 miles away and we were destined to be doomed. Neither of us could work out how to make it work. I decided we shouldn't try and then changed my mind. James, my partner, then decided it was best that we didn't try and changed his mind. As you can imagine, all of this took a toll on my appetite, not to mention the now 40 cigarettes I was smoking a day to help with heartache and hopeless depression about not having a job, or a goal, life or now the man I love. Awesome. I moved to London in an effort to completely revamp my life. I was aware it...

I can't cook - Oreo stuffed cookie dough and chocolate brownie

Image
Yes, you did read that right. Upon my nightly ritual of looking at Instagram for about 5 minutes to see what recipes are there kicking about, I came across this on BuzzfeedFood. In nothing but a 30 second or so clip to show you how to make this freaking delight. I roped my housemate who is a lover of all things chocolate into this plan, and decided this was our chosen goodie for our next "bake night" You will need! A ready to bake packet of cookie dough mix A ready to bake packet of brownie And biscuits of your choice We used fake Oreos and Biscoff because of the new obsession I have with the Biscoff Krispy Kremes. Literally don't even bother trying one because that may or may not be your sole intake for the next week and a half. We both separated the extremely hard work of adding a table spoon to our mixture. It needed more than this but you guys will work it out Cookie dough first, smoosh it around a baking pan as the bottom layer Layer in the b...

Picked your own veg and then made a soup!

Image
I wanted to surprise my master chef with a trip out. I picked Hewits farm which is well known for their pick your own fruit and veg!*  *according to google. It was a mini mission to get there. After a train to Kent, we had to cross over about 56 roundabouts and walk on the roads just to get there. That's how you can tell you're not really in London anymore. That and there wasn't a Starbucks to be seen. There wasn't much on offer as the seasons are just switching over, but it was really fun and i imagine it would be 10x better in summer! I literally haven't been since I was a kid so this was such a treat. We got cabbage, beans, swiss chards, potatoes, broccoli and shallots.                                        With some of the veg we collected, i made this soul warmi...

The 3 Cornish Gems

Image
After my laptop breaking and dropping my phone down the toilet and losing a lot of my latest posts, including this one, i'm feeling a little under the emotional weather. None the less! I still remember my wonderful time in Cornwall with 2 of my greatest friends and here are the 2 best hidden and one not so hidden) / places I picked. Gunwalloe In the middle of no where was this super secluded beach, with an added wedding. It's a pretty ace place to get married. We didn't bathe on the pebble one but located next to it was an equally lovely sandy one with hills stretched for miles behind it, perfect for a small "hike". Something for everyone's needs. Porthleven harbour I flipping loved this harbour, even more than i loved the rose wine and that is saying something. This simple, cute harbour makes you feel like you are in France. Its swim friendly, which is awesome and made me promptly sad i didn't have my swimming costume. It has a variety of re...

I can't cook #4 - Nutella cornflake truffles

Image
I can't even. I discovered these could infact be a thing when my lovely other half had bought me some nutella and stored it in the fridge. I came to have my comforting nutella on toast and i couldn't even get it out of the jar without chipping it off and that my friends, was the beginning of how these were born. You will need: A jar of nutella Cornflakes / rice crispies / cocopops or any just as good Aldi variety Anything else you might want to add in to make it rocky road style like; marshmallows, raisins, craisins... Put your cereal in a bowl and then mash it all up with the back of a spoon. Be careful not to get it everywhere because that's what i did. Add nutella and fold it into the cereal of your choice. I also adopted the "smash it in there" technique which works just as well, if not better. Add anything else you might want to put in and then put it in the fridge to stiffen a little. I would say about 15- 25 mins. You could read a magazin...

I cant cook #3 - OMG green juice

Image
As i was boiling my spring greens for the occasional healthy salad i like to make as an attempt of trying to replicate what i eat out, i tipped away all the green juice in the pan and was suddenly like... OH MY GOD. So i poured the rest into a glass, this is where the good stuff is right? That's why steaming is better, because it keeps all the nutrients locked in. If, like me, sometimes you have a kitchen so grubby you cant find things to steam in and the microwave smells like 4 other peoples curries (#studenthalls) you may find refuge in a saucepan. I thought to myself, WHY AM I POURING ALL THE GOODNESS AWAY and came up with an idea to make it more drinkable. I chose - Spring greens - Basil - Spinach But feel free to wack in like Parsley cos that's well good for you, kale... you know the drill. Boil and save all the veg for dinner and use the juice. Add whatever you want to it. I imagine apple juice would be great, 100% pure obvs. Almond milk would probably work if you want a ...

Newquay Town

Image
Im lucky enough to have a family to go on holiday with, which makes me super happy. After 3 years off the family tradition, my dad decided it was time to spend some seaside time together again. That and my mums gentle persuaison. This year was a little different. We had a new little man with us and my sisters boyfriend. After the most chaotic journey to Cornwall in the history of time, or mostly our time, we had finally arrived. I say chaotic, we were just stuck in holiday traffic for 9 hours. We all settled in to Priory Lodge which is our go-to hotel for staying in Newquay. The food is great, the staff are great and it feels like a second home. Our second day there, we managed to do what the Edwards's do best on their first day of holiday. Go to pound land. Don't ask me why. You would have thought the novelty would have worn off now its become so popular in almost every town and I am never more like 3 minutes away from about 4 in London but no. We still managed to spent ...

Tap cafe

Image
Rosie and i had ambitions to walk to London Bridge, then Covent Garden to Oxford Street. Unfortunately (or fortunately) for us, the weather had other ideas. Aside from the windy chaos that is outside, we didn't let the intermittent showers dampen our spirits (Get it!?) I scoffed a sandwich down on the way to the lift after my very late wake up of 11.30am. Better than i have been in the past so don't feel too guilty but am in desperate need of a caffeine fix and Rosie knows just the place. Tap is located in Soho and would be relatively difficult to find if I hadn't have had Rosie navigating the way ferociously even with umbrella troubles. It looks like a place that would be a "lucky find" and something different to your generic coffee shop. I had a flat white - yes, that happened - and a homemade pistachio florentine that got delivered to our table. We were given cute little bottles with playing cards as numbers for our order which was pretty cool and every...

Wigmore castle

Image
So today was the celebratory day of our one year anniversary, so we decided not to break tradition and go on a castle date. Classic. When we got there we found out where to park which was so, so close to the castle. Not. James spoke to a medium scary looking man at a village hall that looked like he was holding something heavy and bat like but he was happy to learn we were going to the castle before giving us a general direction. It was a little mission to get there but the weather was on our side. We walked down, then up, then through a graveyard, down a windy path, by some posh houses that I pretended could be mine one day for 5 pounds and then up a giant hill until we got to the front of the castle. We had a nice chat with an elderly man on the way who spoke about the castle like it was the greatest thing to exist. He was cute and reminded me of my grandad. We got there and had a look around, it was pretty big concidering it doesn't look like much from far away....

I can't cook #2 - Herby tomato and cheddar pasta bake.

Image
I was in the mood for some hearty food after a weekend of naughty nibbling. I was surprised to see i had not gained but lost weight over my weekend break (even with all the cocktails) which inspired me to ignore the microwave and get stuck in. Some amount of pasta (I used a lot, that is a measurement) 1 can of co-op chopped tomatoes with oregano and garlic 2 heaped table spoons of tomato puree 30g of Half fat mature cheddar A sprinkle of parmesan, going to guess about 10g Quarter of a white onion I cooked the pasta in salted boiling water until it was aldente then drained and added chopped tomatoes. I fried some onions with the 1 cal light spray as i had left my coconut oil somewhere. Added the onions, puree and smooshed it all around then put it in a baking dish I lay some sliced cheese on the top and sprinkled the parmesan over it for crispiness. In the oven for 20 minutes on about 190. Add salt and pepper to taste after! I don't know how many syns are in this, ...

Ognisko

Image
This beautiful Victorian stucco building, located on exhibition road has a background just as strong as it looks. Intended for use as a gentleman's club in the 1940's, the building quickly became the seat of the Polish Government in Exile during and after the second world war. It also housed relief society for Poles who sent parcels to Polish prisoners of war and refugees around the world. Inside is just as mesmerising, with high, decorative ceilings and big beautiful beams. I knew the food had to look this good too. My boyfriend James and i were greeted immediately and had both of our coats taken to put in the cloakroom. We walked into this stunning candle lit room and we were seated. After being given a choice of a variety of breads, we took our first drinks order. Keeping in theme with the Polish restaurant, we both opted for a vodka martini with a twist. The manager Jasiu came over and introduced himself. He was lovely. He had a warm smile and a cheeky glint in his ...
